Typing “Happy Birthday” either triggers a birthday-hat donning emoji that pops out of a gift box with an explosion of confetti or displays a delicious birthday cake. If you’re sending your fellow Hangouts aficionado some birthday wishes via the app, you’ll both get a little surprise celebration. The inclusion of the animation is just one of a handful of unlisted emojis added to Hangouts with the latest update. It’s been an ongoing gag with Google to throw in bonus animations. In Hangouts, you can use way more emojis and send pictures or draw doodles (but for those last two, you need to have a Google+ account).

It’d be nice if there were a public list somewhere, or mouse hovering gave you some clues about using a shortcut. Then just click on any emoji, and it will be added to your conversation. Google is certainly no stranger to the artform of Easter eggs, especially on their Android phones.

In the categories sheet paste the emoji of your choice into the category column. Check Outbound and Internal – sending in Email message to affect. Scroll to the Content compliance setting under Compliance section. Click Add another or Configure depending on whether you had rules already. If this article is TL;DR, you can watch this short video.

To get your Hangout doodle on, place your mouse over the picture icon (the little mountain scene in the bottom-right corner of the chat box) and it will reveal a pencil icon directly to its left. (Seems unnecessarily complicated, no?) Click on the pencil icon and it will open a work space that you can use to “”draw”” simple line pictures. You can choose a number of brush sizes, shapes, colors, and amounts of transparency. Keeping with Google’s fun-loving spirit, Hangouts includes several secrets, hidden features, and so much more for chatting with your friends no matter where they are. One of our favorite aspects of the chat app is Google’s animated emoji collection that can be activated by using keywords and phrases to immediately activate the animations within your chats.

Here are 10 fun tricks you can use to amuse yourself and your friends the next time you chat. Why would you ever choose to say something with words, when you could say it with an adorable little cartoon character? I can’t think of a reasonable answer to that question. Thankfully, Hangouts makes it possible to never type a word again. Seriously, there are enough emoji available here to represent anything within the spectrum of human experience. Throughout the years, various Google communication functions have been integrated into the greater Hangouts environment (e.g. Google Talk, Google Voice).

Close the chat and reopen to clear it and go back to the plain white screen. If one isn’t enough, try “/ponystream” to make a continuous string of ponies run back and forth in the chat. It will just keep going until you use the command again, so depending on how much you like the stampede, you can keep it running for the duration of the chat. This is seen on your screen only, so you can’t just trample your friend’s chat box.

The laughing emoji has been the one that has caught everyone’s attention because, well, we all like to convey in text how funny things are. A full list is then pretty easy to automatically build. We won’t share your email address with any third-parties. You can move all your Google chat contacts to the right side of the screen in Labs, under Settings.

Are you sick of the simple white background in Google Hangouts? Type in “/bikeshed” and your chatbox will change to a random color. If the hue doesn’t quite match your desktop, type it again for a new color. Somewhat annoyingly, Google hasn’t documented any of their Hangouts keyboard shortcuts to tell you that when you urgently need to insert 💩 (pile of poo U+1F4A9) you can just type ~.

Angry at someone’s comment, but lack the words to say so? If you type “/pitchforks” into Google Hangouts, villagers with fire and pitchforks will run back and forth across your chat window. If you need more dogs in your life, simply type “/corgis” into Google Hangouts and watch a short-legged pup strut across your chatbox. There are two different corgis, so keep typing the command for a chance to see each dog.

It’s really easy to access Hangouts from your Google account using a web browser or using the Google Hangouts app on your smartphone or tablet. Another aim was to make characters larger and have them take better advantage of the tiny space they can occupy. This is seen in the vehicle emoji, while several others are now more realistic.
